Monique Mayers, founder and author at ChocoLit Press™

Monique Mayers is a Bajan-Canadian children's author and the founder of ChocoLit Press™. She writes picture books that celebrate Black hair, confidence, and identity — including the three-book Curls, Confidence & Courage series (Wash Day, Braid Day, and My Day) and The Sparkliest Unicorn. Her work blends vibrant illustration with rhythmic, practical text to make hair care and self-love approachable for young readers.

About Monique

Monique Mayers is a Bajan-Canadian author and mother who is passionate about creating stories that celebrate diversity and promote self-confidence. Through her books, she aims to inspire children to embrace their natural hair and express their unique beauty.

She began writing after a familiar frustration: hair care routines with her own toddler were difficult, and the children's books meant to help either weren't practical or didn't reflect her daughter's hair at all. So she wrote the book she was looking for. Wash Day: A Care and Style Guide for Little Curls turns the wash routine into an interactive, illustrated experience a child can actually follow — and it became the first title in a series.

Mayers blends vibrant illustrations with engaging, rhythmic text to make hair care and self-love fun, approachable, and relatable for kids. Her stories are written for children across the global Black diaspora — Caribbean, African, Canadian, British, and American — and centre everyday joy rather than treating Black childhood as a subject to be explained.

Founder of ChocoLit Press™

Beyond her own writing, Monique founded ChocoLit Press™ to open a door for other Black authors. The press was born out of frustration with an industry that routinely overlooked submissions from Black writers — including from publishers that described themselves as committed to diversity. ChocoLit Press™ commits to responding to every author who submits a manuscript, whether or not it moves forward.

If you're a Black author with a manuscript, you can submit your work here.
